A home steeped in history
Three hundred metres from a former residence of the Knights of Malta, a fortified house once stood on the hillside. Its vaulted lower substructures still remain, formed by a series of transverse barrel vaults. It was upon these cellars that the present-day Chartreuse was built around 1630 by Jacques d’Aurout, Lord of La Palisse in Bigorre, appointed Mayor of Bergerac by Louis XIII in 1629.
